The Quirky Gift Co.
My own Shopify store for personalised, quirky gifts — built as a revenue stream I own outright, running alongside Etsy.

The challenge
I was already selling personalised gifts on Etsy, and it works — but a marketplace only ever rents you the audience. It takes a cut of every order, owns the customer relationship, sets the rules, and sits my products next to everyone else's.
I wanted a second channel I actually own: my own storefront, my own brand, my own customer list and my own margins — without giving up the made-to-order, personalised range that sells.
The approach
I built the whole thing end to end:
- A full Shopify storefront — brand, layout, product range and the personalisation flow — stood up to run solo alongside everything else I do.
- A wide, quirky range organised into shop-by-category and shop-by-occasion, so browsing has a job rather than being a wall of products: door toppers, metal signs, wall prints, keyrings, 3D-printed gifts and license plates.
- Made-to-order personalisation on the products that need it, so a name or a place turns a stock design into a one-off.
- Product and category copy written in the brand's own voice — playful and a little cheeky — instead of flat marketplace listings.
Strategy
A marketplace rents you reach; a store builds you an asset. Etsy stays in the mix as a discovery channel, but The Quirky Gift Co is where I own the brand and the customer — so the audience I build compounds for me, not for the platform.
Design
Clean and modern, with plenty of white space so the products do the talking. The personality lives in the words and the designs, not in a busy layout — clear browse paths by category, by occasion and by best-seller keep the whole range easy to move through.
Build
Shopify and Liquid for the storefront, with made-to-order and print-on-demand fulfilment behind the personalised products. No custom back end to babysit — the point was a channel I could launch quickly and run single-handed.
The outcome
The Quirky Gift Co is a channel I own outright — my brand, my customer relationships and my margin, running next to Etsy rather than underneath it.
It's the same case I put to clients who sell on marketplaces or social platforms: rent the audience while it works, but build the thing you own. This one is me taking my own advice.
