New website

New business website design

A complete website designed and built around what you actually sell and who buys it — usually a first proper site, or a long-overdue replacement for one that's holding you back.

This is the full job: I work out what your website needs to do, write it, design it and build it. Most people come to me for one of two reasons — they've never had a proper website, or the one they've got is quietly costing them customers.

I start with words, not colours. If a visitor can't tell what you do in a sentence, no amount of nice design will save it. So I begin with the least glamorous, most important question: what do you sell, and who's buying?

Who it’s for

Small and independent businesses who want a site that looks professional and, more importantly, works. Restaurants, trades, makers and shops who are tired of explaining their own website over the phone.

Problems it solves

  • Nobody can tell what you do from your homepage, so most visitors leave before they scroll.
  • The thing you want people to do — book, call, buy — is buried where no one will find it.
  • Your current site falls apart on a phone, which is where most people will actually see it.

What you get

A clear, fast website built around one main thing you want visitors to do.

Copy written in your voice, not brochure language.

A simple way for you to make everyday edits yourself.

Sensible analytics that respect your visitors' privacy.

How it goes

  1. I ask annoying questions

What you sell, who buys it, and why they choose you. The least glamorous part of the job and easily the most important.

  2. I decide what goes where

I plan each page around the one thing a visitor needs to do. Anything that doesn't help that gets cut.

  3. I write it, then build it

Words first, design around them. Fast, clear, and working properly on a phone.

  4. I don't disappear

I launch, watch what people actually do, and fix what's confusing.

What it costs

There's no fixed price, because there's no fixed website. A single clear site for a small business is a very different job from a shop with hundreds of products. I scope every project after an honest conversation about what you need, give you a written quote before anything starts, and never surprise you with a bill. If a cheaper, smaller approach would serve you better, I'll say so.

How long it takes

Usually four to eight weeks from first conversation to launch, depending on how much writing and photography is involved and how quickly I can get feedback from you.

Common questions

Do I need to write all the words myself?

No. Writing the site is part of the job. I'll ask you plenty of questions and turn your answers into copy that sounds like you.

Will I be able to update it myself?

Yes. I set the site up so everyday changes — hours, prices, new items — take minutes, and I show you how.

What if I only need something small?

Then I'll build you something small. If a single page would do the job, I'll tell you rather than sell you more.

Thinking about a new website?

Tell me a little about your business and what you're hoping to achieve. I'll come back with an honest view on whether I'm the right fit.
